Making A Touch of Mystic Wand

First Step:

Learning about the person, their path

and what they are looking for in a magical tool like a wand.

This case a Prosperity Wand was requested.

Step Two:

Pick the wood.

I usually do not have any specific kind of wood on hand.

I also usually do not let the customer pick the wood.

The wood has a tendency to call out to me after I have come to it with a purpose.

I do not hold true to wood properties because I am about to transform the wood

and give it, its new intent as I create it.

This wand called forth for my stock of cedar.

Step Three:

Once the wood is picked I need to decide what part is to be the handle

and which part will be the body of the wand.

Step Four:

Cut pieces to size.

Step Five:

Drill both parts so they can incense of choice placed inside the wand.

Here is the beginning of the intent for the wand.

This also will be how the wand is put together.

Step Six:

The incense is picked and packed inside the wand.

Both in the body and the handle.

Step Seven:

A dowel is glued in the body of the wand and

the handle is attached to the body.

Step Eight:

Let the carving begin.

Step Nine:

Shaping and sanding of the wand.

Though I am using a power tool the wand never leaves my hand during creation.

Step Ten:

Sanding...and sanding... and sanding by hand.

Starting with course grit and working down to a fine grit for that smooth feel.

Step Eleven:

Making that seam line between handle and body almost disappear.

Step Twelve:

Did I mention sanding?

More sanding at this point I am trying to get out what imperfections I can.

Things like dips in the wood from carving to deep

or any cracks that may weaken the wand.

This is a continued process between the different

grits of paper smoothing and forming the wand.

Step Thirteen:

Sealing the wand to protect it from normal elemental damage.

I use Tung Oil do to this. It is about as “natural” as I can get for a nice seal that does

not “cover” the wand in an artificial coating but still lets the wood be itself and breath.

This oil also allows the incense oil to be added to the wood.

Step Fourteen:

Anointing the wand with incense oil with

the same properties as the powder added to the wand.

The Finished Wand:
