Path of a Dragon What if the Gods , Goddess and religion are, fictions, ghosts invented for recreational purposes by our forefathers, in order to provide a motivation for the masses, and to act as internal, ever watching policemen? ME < OF < L sacrificium, equiv. to sacri- (comb. form of sacer holy) + -fic-, comb. form of facere to make, do1 + -ium -ium; (v.) ME sacrifisen, deriv. of the n.] Firstly, what is 'Magic'? To our Ancestors things like Jet Transport, Rockets to the Moon, Cell-Phones, PCs, Genetics, Anti-Biotics - things we take for granted on an almost every day basis, would have been seen as 'Magic'. Yet to us, clearly, they are not.Similarly Herbology - if one use Chamomile to relieve PMT, or St Johns Wort to relieve depression is this magic? Or is it merely knowledge of biochemistry/physiology?Similarly the use of crystals - these are merely 'lenses' that concentrate power (albeit in a number of different ways). If one is lucky enough to stand within one of the stone circles in Ireland or Britain one can feel that power. Indeed ultrasound studies have shown that such circles 'sing' yet inside the circle there is silence at the ultrasound frequencies. Some Wiccans would say that 'magic' is a means of inflicting one's will to cause physical manifestations or the creation of things or effects via spells. Yet to the Dragon, is this the case? You notice I do not use the term magicK, and this is for good reason. This spelling was, I believe, first coined by Alistair Crowley in order to differentiate what he saw as 'true magic' from the mere conjuring tricks of stage entertainers. All well and good you might say - yet having watched many practitioners of 'magick' that is exactly what it is - a conjuring trick, smoke and mirrors - with no real effect.Ritual and ritual tools are not the be all and end all - they are tools. They are merely an aid to focus. Just as, for example, the Christian cross is a symbol and aid to faith.Similarly coloured candles, staffs, whatever, are an aid. Yet many would say you must have this coloured candle for this spell, or you must do it at this time of day for that spell. All well and good - if that helps you then do it, yet it is not necessary unless you need it to be necessary. Hence my discomfort with the term 'magick' and my reference to conjuring tricks and smoke and mirrors.Ok then you say, so what is Dragon magic? Some Wiccans would say that 'magic' is a means of inflicting one's will to cause physical manifestations or the creation of things or effects'. Yet do we really create anything? If a sculptor takes a piece of marble and works away at it with hammer and chisel with consummate skill to produce a beautiful statue has he really created anything? (Or was the beauty already inherent in the stone?) Similarly the Bard, producing a wonderful piece of music - has he created anything? (Or were the sounds already there?)To the Dragon the answers to those 2 questions would be a resounding NO! The Dragon stands immersed within the universe not just as an Individual but within, and connected to, the greater world around them via Divinity. Hence you do not create anything, it has already been created as part of Creation itself - you merely re-arrange things via that linkage of Divinity. So, the definition of Dragon magic would be: 'The use of the conscious will, in concert with the skill of your innerself, to re-shape, re-arrange or re-order Creation, via the linkage of Divinity, in order to cause change.'Thus Dragon magic is based in the intimate knowledge of one's connection to Creation via Divinity, and comes from the harmonisation of one's self with the world around one. Once you can do that then all the rest, is just smoke and mirrors. Once you can do that, then it becomes easy to use one's conscious will, in concert with one's skill, to re-shape, re-arrange or re-order Creation in order to cause change, whatever this change may be: 'healing', 'seership', 'soul retrieval' etc. Dragons; the ruler of the past and who knows, rulers of the present even if they hide in the shadows Everybody knows what a dragon is: an enormous, fierce, bloodthirsty creature appearing in fairy tales and legends as an accessory whose main function is to set off the bravery of the knight challenging him. The dragon is an obscure, mysterious character, described only in broad terms, and is little more than a foil to enhance the hero's valor. But the dragon is something else... They are an admirable, intelligent and educated creature, who leads a most interesting life. They have some fascinating characteristics in addition to those occasional glimpses we are given through fairy tales and legend. Dragons can be found in many different cultures all around the world and have just as many descriptions. Yet regardless of the descriptions attached to it humankind seemed to have a subconscious knowledge of the dragon and its powers. Dragon is derived from the Latin word Draco, and Dragon comes from a verb meaning to see, to look at or to flash. Dragon has been used in many different fields such as astrology, astronomy, alchemy, magic, heraldry, psychology and the studies of dreams. Since humans began to record things , such as the first known written language of Sumerian , dragons have been found. Take note through all history the Dragon is the one creature that has "survived" through myth and legend when many others were lost. Not everyone is supposed to work Dragon Magic. Before you work with dragons, take some time to look at yourself. Do you like dragons for who they are, or are you just interested in power? Do you feel you would do better in other area's of magic? If you feel dragon magic is not for you, then don't do it. Do your research. Study the myths and legends. In these stories are your keys to unlocking the door and finding your dragon. Continue such study with meditation and placing a dragon item on your altar. A picture , statue or some like item to help you with this will do just fine. There are not tons of Dragon spirits wandering around these other plans of existence waiting to be found by seekers to personally guard them from trouble. Dragons represents a universal spirit of immense power that not all people are ready to use. The Dragon is the ultimate representation of the forces of Mother Nature, the greatest divine force on Earth. One can call forth a dragon or sometimes Dragons will choose who they wish to work with. This is not a fast and easy process, but surrounding yourself with Dragon symbols can help. Many Dragons will come to children for they find children in their innocents to be the most fun to work with and honest. Such many have found to have a Dragon like having a guardian angel if they remain honest and true to themselves. But just like humans Dragons can pick and choose friends and also get very temperamental with the ones they are working with. Dragon Magic is , I believe , one of the oldest magical workings in the world. Being the earliest it is the simplest and most pure and arose at a time when religiosity and hocus pocus had yet to cripple mans mind. Our entire understanding of and relationship with the universe is governed by our body chemistry and, understanding this, Old Dragons compiled a series of exercises to which, of late, a vast amount of mumbo jumbo has been attached, by people who probably thought that it couldnt, or shouldnt, be that simple. Undoubtedly a great many dubious individuals have set themselves up as authorities on Magic. Having tried it and having also failed miserably to achieve anything, they have deduced that the formulae were too simple and therefore there must be something lacking. It would not occur to them that it was they, and not the discipline, that was missing the vital components. In an attempt to make simple, straightforward, workable Magic work for them, over the centuries they and their underachieving successors have added to it layer upon layer of pointless, unnecessary junk. Magic is not complicated. Magic is not special , it has been around since the beginning. It is not a religion. Religion and magic are not identical for they do not have identical goals. Religion relies on prayer and sacrifice of the person believing, where as magic is manipulative and applies means to a specific end.Magic seems to have assumed a more prominent role in Paganism than it possessed historically. Yes, people believed in it. Yes, they wore charms and yes they believed in curses. But this was not part of religion but outside of it, more in addition to, than a necessary component. They worshiped the Gods and Goddess without recourse to magic, by sacrificing animals, or incense, or cakes, or by participating in the large public rituals. But rituals today seem often magic rather than religious. Certainly you can find books of rituals that include weddings and funerals and hand fasting but you'll also find completely non-ancient elements. For myself, I want to know what my ancestors believed and I want to know what forms their devotion to the Gods and Goddess took. I want to adapt those beliefs and those practices to the modern world. Then of course one may ask then how do we do such in todays modern world? I think we have to be reasonable and accept that there have to be some adjustments made.We no longer have access to temples, sacred groves and public spaces. This is one of the ways in which our modern world has changed and is no longer conducive to ancient practice. For us practicing our religion outside the norm, we face persecution if we do so publicly. We can't recapture the past in its entirety with all its beliefs and practices, and translate them completely into the present. We have to make do with what we have, and this will include introduction of some things our ancestors were unfamiliar with and adoption of others so that they fit into the modern world. For example, we will see very little animal sacrifice today. We simply haven't the means to carry on with this ancient practice. We would almost be better off going to our local grocery store and giving thanks there, then such sacrifice. So then what should we do you ask? Sacrifice in other ways. In ancient times sacrifice was a way to show thanks for what was given to them. "The surrender or destruction of something prized or desirable for the sake of something considered as having a higher or more pressing claim." When you pour out the wine to the earth what are you really giving up? Customs and traditions of our ancestors are no longer relevant. For better or worse, their world is gone. We must find a new way to honor the Gods and Goddesses. Paganism is a modern religion with links to a past with borrowed concepts and practices from many spirituality paths. We owe it to ourselves and our children not to miss inform them , but to guide them on a path of true spiritualism and religion of faith. We can not deny any other deity any more then we can expect all of our own. How can we argue a belief and denounce another in the same breath? There is a greater power at work beyond any understanding of a mere mortal. "God" is accepted as being all around us. In the Earth, trees, and water. It is there whether we call it God, Mother Earth , Isis, Bridget, Odin or any other God or Goddess name. Jesus walked the earth just as these others did. We are all children of the God(dess). Most have forgotten how to tap into that power like Jesus did. It is the church that has corrupted the story and has "demanded" their way or else. We must look truly at ourselves and within to find that which has been lost. To truly be Pagan must we reconstruct the truth of what our ancestors really did? Or is it time to redevelop a path for an ever changing world? Many of us are looking for the freedom to personally delve into the mysteries of the divine and find our own answers. No central authority exists or any official bible. Experiences from others in myth legend and stories can help us find our ways but ultimately we follow our individual paths that we find true to ourselves. So is being a Pagan a Religion or a Faith? Is it both or only a path to something else? There may never be a complete answer for these questions but I do believe we need to take a more open look at ourselves and others around us. To place judgment on others is just as bad when they place judgment on us. Pagan of this day means not belonging to a main stream religion yet we are looking to be excepted as such. Are we defined by these words or are we defined by our faith? What we believe has a significant influence on what we do. If we believe in justice, we are much more likely to act in behalf of justice. If we believe there is hope for this life, that belief will influence what we do and how we plan for the future. What we believe not only influences us, it influences our children and society. For my purposes here, I assume that what we believe does matter. Thus work on building your own theology. Do not depend on one source for wisdom and inspiration, and do not have a one-dimensional theology. Regarding sources for wisdom and inspiration, dip your bucket in as many currents of the spiritual and philosophical stream as you want. Sample what is offered by all the major religions and never feel compelled to draw from just one source. But with all that said, let me encourage you to eventually settle in with one primary tradition and to drink deeply, though not exclusively, from that well. Which religious tradition you choose as primary is a matter of personal preference. What is important is that you eventually find, or create for yourself, a religious tradition that gives you an adequate sense of religious identity, that helps you make meaning of life, and gives you a sense of a spiritual root. Legend , myth and facts. Sometimes such lines are not so easily drawn. Especially in a belief so filled with misconception and falsehood. But what must be believe is what is true to your heart. Can this change? yes.. Can it be wrong? sometimes.. But will it grow? of course. I can not tell you what is true. I can not be certain what I tell is fact. It is true to me. I try to present that which I understand. I have heard and seen things I can not explain except with the word Magic. I have believed that which can only be described with the word Hope. With all the different version and all the different beliefs I can not say what I do here is right or wrong. There is much out there do your own research and find your truths. Here is only mine and only a piece. There is so much of culture and history that could fill pages beyond pages of with out ever touching Religion and belief. I am no history teacher. I am nothing more then a student like the rest. I hope just to present here what I find as true and hope helps others move on their own path. Many of us are looking for the freedom to personally delve into the mysteries of the divine and find our own answers. No central authority exists or any official bible. Experiences from others in myth legend and stories can help us find our ways but ultimately we follow our individual paths that we find true to ourselves. Being polytheist we acknowledge other points of view without judging or persecuting we have endured in the past. Each path contains a different focus. None are completely right or wrong but are correct for the individual at a certain time in life. Religion, as a living transforming process, is alive in the forest and oceans, working for the healing of the earth. It is alive in the whole human family, working for the healing and reconciliation of our global village. Religion is alive in each of us, working to bring us into conscious awareness of our indivisible union with this one indivisible life. Be humble enough to stay open to new ideas, new realities, new paradigms, but have faith enough to follow with conviction your own reason and conscience. We all have faith one way or another even in our darkest times when we think there is not, is this not a faith of the worse? The simplest of definitions, and simplest of facts , faith starts with yourself. Faith is the acceptance of that which we imagine to be true, that which we cannot prove. The crusher of dreams is our own self doubt. The true power is your belief in yourself. Find that path to this truth and then you will find your answers. Then you can look to the world about you and hear what it has to teach. If you can not hear yourself how do expect to hear anything else? Are we just listening but not hearing? Are we looking but not seeing? Are we touching but not feeling? Are we being honest with ourselves? We walk down this path of Paganism in hopes to find the answers at the end of the path. Yet such a path will never have an end. Such a journey, of research and development is an on going path with no end insight. Such is not suppose to be a feeling of never reaching a goal but to know you will always have a journey ahead of you. For such a path of growth and learning is never ending. Tear down your walls, look to your heart , mind and soul. Accept yourself for what you are, what you were and what you can become. In the end you will find no end but a path of greatness. I do not find that religion has been invented but that rules were laid down to bring some control over a group of people that were becoming a society and needed consequence for ones actions. Wiccan has their Reed. According to most versions of the three-fold law, whatever one does comes back to one thrice-multiplied, in amplified repercussion. One short, rhymed version of the Wiccan Reed states "Eight words the Wiccan Reed fulfill: An it harm none, do what you will." Often "none" is interpreted to include the doer him self in analogy to the "golden rule" of other faiths. A good rule. Myself I lean more towards Karma. The explanation of karma can differ per tradition. Usually it is believed to be a sum of all that an individual has done, is currently doing and will do. Karma is not about retribution, vengeance, punishment or reward; karma simply deals with what is. The effects of all deeds actively create past, present and future experiences, thus making one responsible for one's own life, and the pain and joy it brings to others. In religions that incorporate reincarnation, karma extends through one's present life and all past and future lives as well. It is cumulative. Karma is a force of nature and not a sentient creature capable of making value judgments, karma isn't about good and evil deeds, because applying those labels would be judgmental, but that it is about positive and negative energy, where negative energy can include things not seen as "being bad" like sadness and fear, and positive energy can be caused by being creative and solving problems as well as by exuding love and doing virtuous acts. At some point as people we need a "code" or "rule" book to live by. Wether it is the Wiccan Reed , Code of the Samurai , The Golden Rule , or something else you follow that makes you a "better" person to live with in society. Find that place that is true for you , makes you happy, makes others happy and helps contribute to the world around you in a positive note. The Samurai code of chivalry known as Kyuba no michi ("The Way of Horse and Bow") later changed to the Bushido ("Way of the Warrior") code. It was at the heart of the beliefs and conduct of the Samurai. The philosophy of Bushido is "freedom from fear." It meant that the Samurai transcended his fear of death. That gave him the peace and power to serve his master faithfully and loyally and die well if necessary. "Duty" is a primary philosophy of the Samurai. In my case my "master" is myself and my "duty" is to the world around me. The Code of Samurai (Bushidou) Justice (Gi) 1. the quality of being just; righteousness, equitableness, or moral rightness: to uphold the justice of a cause.2. rightfulness or lawfulness, as of a claim or title; justness of ground or reason: to complain with justice.3. the moral principle determining just conduct.4. conformity to this principle, as manifested in conduct; just conduct, dealing, or treatment.5. the administering of deserved punishment or reward I try and do things that are found morally right in societies eyes. Bravery (Yuu) 1. brave spirit or conduct; courage; valor.2. showiness; splendor; magnificence. I try and be brave in standing up for myself and do what is right even when it is not easy to do. Benevolence (Jin) 1. desire to do good to others; goodwill; charitableness: to be filled with benevolence toward one's fellow creatures.2. an act of kindness; a charitable gift. I try to contribute to the world around be by being kind to others and the world itself. Politeness (Rei) 1. showing good manners toward others, as in behavior, speech, etc.; courteous; civil: a polite reply.2. refined or cultured: polite society.3. of a refined or elegant kind: polite learning. I try in todays society to have good manners and be courteous to all. Veracity (Makoto) 1. habitual observance of truth in speech or statement; truthfulness: He was not noted for his veracity.2. conformity to truth or fact; accuracy: to question the veracity of his account.3. correctness or accuracy, as of the senses or of a scientific instrument.4. something veracious; a truth. I try to always speak the truth to others for my word is something I hold very important. Honor (Meiyo) 1. honesty, fairness, or integrity in one's beliefs and actions: a man of honor.2. a source of credit or distinction: to be an honor to one's family.3. high respect, as for worth, merit, or rank: to be held in honor.4. such respect manifested: a memorial in honor of the dead.5. high public esteem; fame; glory I try to keep my word and stay true to my actions and promises. Loyalty (Chuugi) 1. the state or quality of being loyal; faithfulness to commitments or obligations.2. faithful adherence to a sovereign, government, leader, cause, etc. I try to be faithful to myself, my beliefs, family and friends in all I do. With these positive goals I hope to keep the karma around me on positive notes and pray to the Goddess and Gods to help me in times are difficult when maybe karma is hitting me from a past negative energy I have contributed to the universe. I have seen many a people feeling confused and lost between faiths and or religions. One such being Christian and or Wiccan. Or any other combinations. Though many may wish to argue the following point.. I will ask this for you to answer in your own mind and heart. How much different is the bible to all the other myth and lore found in all the other cultures and beliefs? For all accounts the bible is the only evidence of said accounts. There has been not absolute evidence of Jesus or Noah etc. Yes there are some hints and possibilities just as there are with other religions and myths. There was most likely a Buddha.. founders of the Celtics.. native American spirits.. why not Jesus? Times change and so does the world. In that time Jesus helped start a unification of the world about. Then the church stepped in and we have what we have today. A dark cloud of confusion. What matters is what you find true to your heart and your own mind. If it makes you feel complete and it helps you down the path then how can anyone call it wrong or not right? The bible is a tool just as the legends are to the Celtics and the stories of the Egyptians. If you are able to take all and learn from them , then you have just started the road of being a true Pagan. This is when it is time to listen to your inner voice, and decide the truth for yourself. This is a truth that only you know, and no one can ever take away. Written or spoken a word can be very powerful or completely useless. Some will hear it .. some will feel it .. some will never understand it. Stories.. poems.. myths , legends and spells all hold an energy. This comes from you, for each word holds as much power as you put into them. So when it is in your heart take pen to paper , pencil to pad or type to keyboard. Let this become one of the tools you can use to express yourself.. to be an outlet of your power your energy. Let the world hear your voice and let it be known. In time you may find this will be an outlet for spells of magic. Hold those true and close. They do not need to rhythm or have a specific pattern. Remember the words power is what you give it. I never wished to preach a "religion" here. So much has been lost to the winds of history that such a "truth" may never be understood again. What I have tried to instill in you was an outline for you to use on your path for what ever that may be. I do believe Wiccan or any other pagan path would be able to take this outline and fill in what is important to them. We are all part of this world no matter what we believe and what we do. Yet what we do contributes to this world and it is up to you to decided what you will give it. Religion is just one of many pieces that make us what we are. Society plays a large roll along with family and all other of the "influences" we are subject to. What we decided to do with it all is the truth inside us that must be found. I do not denounce any other beliefs or religions because anything is possible and just maybe they are a piece to this larger puzzle. I only wish not to be told this way or the highway. There are many differences and there are many similarities if we take the time to look. If we all find that common ground would not this world be just a little better place? Find your truth.. legend.. myth.. god.. gods.. goddess.. books and family traditions are all tools we can use to find that which we seek so desperately, answers to the questions we ask. Will we listen or ignore and continue to be lost? No matter the path taken , chosen or given, what truly matters is that you are happy and it helps fulfill yourself. What does it mean to be Pagan in the 21st century? Well for many it means our "garden" is a potted plant sitting on our balcony. That between work and the family our "own" time consists of surfing the net or just sleeping. The closest wild life is the pigeon that pooped on your car last night. This "modern" world has separated us from the earth we so cherish and worship. This concrete world disconnects us from it and from each other. In this modern world I never have to leave the house to "connect" with millions yet never actually touch them. We no long have the village to rely on and the "priest/ess" to go to for our spiritual needs. Before you brought offering to them , (goat, corn, wine etc.) and they spent the time to do ritual and communicating with God and Goddess for us. Then we all came together and had a celebration. Todays day and age much has been lost. Many are left to a solitary path with the occasional interaction with fellow pagans. One is limited in there everyday lives duties let alone to always follow a dedicated spiritual path. So what does that mean for the 21st century Pagan? It means we have to discover a way to become clearer and more dedicated with what we do in the little time we do have to do things. Though it is wonderful to do ritual and have the time to get together with friends and family it is not always practical for our everyday spiritual path and magical workings. Magic does not have to be that complicated for your everyday wants and needs. Shielding and protection for one. Cleansing and just giving thanks to God and Goddess can be done in minuets as long as your intention and wants are true and clear. Magic and spells are your energy and wants. Put it down clearly and give it to the world with true intentions. Light a candle if you wish but it needs not to be long lasting a simple tee light will even do. Your altar, your candles and your other items are your reminders to keep you focused on what you want , need to do , and your spiritual path. Honor them even if it is with a simple walk by just remember to keep it in your heart and mind your true spiritual path. The world has become complicated enough do not complicate yourself and your belief when keeping it true to heart is so simple. Since ancient times humans have built altars to connect with Spirit. It is a powerful way to anchor the energy and intention of your home or business. Altars create special and sacred places in the middle of our ordinary lives. A personal altar provides you with a place to seek quiet, a basic human need which we often forget in our busy, modern world. Altars are powerful because they are a constant visual reminder of our spiritual connection. Building an altar is easier and less complicated than some folks would have you believe. It can be as simple as a tabletop or as complex as an entire chamber-full of stuff. What is really important is to build an altar that means something to you. The idea of an altar is to FOCUS the attention, to root it and to gather the energy. Knowledge is the compass Did you find your way? My Religion is the Faith I have in myself ,the code of the Bushidou and the greater power of the Goddess and God that I relate to in dealing with the power beyond normal understanding.
